Travel Media:

Every state takes pride in its state park system, but the one by which all others are measured is that of Kentucky. Besides being blessed by mountains, forests, whitewater streams, lush areas of grassy hills and prairie, hot spots of American history and a moderate climate, the Bluegrass State also had the good fortune of being included in the development of the Tennessee Valley Authority during its dam building heydays of the 1930s. The result: two of America's largest reservoir lakes, many smaller ones and all the ingredients to become an integral part of a state park system that serves as a blueprint for all other states.

I just got back from one of the best mini-vacations I ever had (and that's saying a lot, because I've had many) and to my surprise (and perhaps to yours) it was Louisville, Kentucky. I went to visit a very good friend who happens to be a native and has always tried to express to me the loveliness of this city. In just two days, I learned that this is a city that could be enjoyed over and over again, either as a resident, or a visitor.

It's hard to pick out one best activity in Ky. There's so much to do and see. Try to see Mammoth Cave. There are several tours of the cave, varying in length of time, and degree of fitness of tourist.

The Louisville Slugger Museum, located at 800 West Main Street in Louisville, Ky., is a baseball fan's delight. You won't have any trouble finding it: the world's tallest baseball bat towers above the combination factory and museum's several stories tall...A treat for all ages. Baseball fans will go nuts; historians will be delighted; and this is a special treat for the kids.

Fly-Casting in The Cumberland River System

Fly-Casting in The Cumberland River System

Mentioning the Cumberland River and trout in the same sentence makes most anglers in the Blue Grass State immediately think of the tailwaters below Lake Cumberland in Russell and Cumberland counties. The reaction is understandable since that portion of the river is widely considered Kentucky's premier fishery for trophy trout. It is also some of the most heavily stocked trout water in the state, receiving almost 100,000 fish each year. More about Fly-Casting in The Cumberland River System

Centuries after Big Turtle led early settlers through the Cumberland Gap into the Shawnee's sacred hunting ground, John Muir and other explorers followed in his footsteps. Now the Sheltowee Trace retraces the ground broken by these pioneers, along a 268-mile National Recreation Trail.
